I’m delighted to welcome returning students back to the hilltop and new students to the Bradley family! You’ll be happy to know we kept busy while you were away for the summer. I want to list some of the projects we’ve completed and will be giving you more info on these later. I just want to give you a heads up.

First is printing. This is something you have been wanting–a new and improved print management system. Well, it’s here! The library is the pilot site for what will become a campus wide printing system. You can choose to print in color or black/white and…ta da!! from the wireless laptops. We truly believe this is an improvement and hope you feel the same way. We have prepared a video walking you through printing from library computers and will be working on one to walk you through printing from your own laptops. Check out the first item under what’s new on the library website.

Second, they are putting the finishing touches on the library cafe on the first floor of the library. The cafe will open 31 August with a grand opening ceremony on 2 September at 10 a.m. The hours of the cafe will be 10 a.m. til 12 midnight. We have also done some rearranging to create casual seating with some tables outside the cafe. I hope you plan to meet your friends here and relax in the library. We will have a naming contest for the cafe later in the semester.

Third, and something I’m very excited about, we will be offering quick reference service via text messaging. Yes, you can text a reference question to the library and receive your answer on your cell phone. I’ll blog more about this later but if you want to use this service now, text 309-222-7740 and enter BUL (our code) then ask your question. Current service hours are M-F 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sat 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. We hope to be adding more hours as the semester progresses.

And, when you walk in the library, you will notice a new Information Desk. Instead of trying to figure out which desk you need to go to, ask your question here and the staff will help you as quickly as possible.

So as you can see, we’ve been keeping busy and getting ready for your return. It’s great seeing the campus come alive and we are ready and eager to help you as you begin your studies and research. Please drop by and see us and once again, WELCOME!!!

The library has started using ILLiad, an interlibrary loan system that allows users to log in, check requests status, and pick up full-text articles.  The login page is at https://dewey.bradley.edu/illiad/.  First-time users need to do a simple user registration.

The library is now open 24/7 to serve you better as you prepare for the end of the semester.  Beginning on Study Day, the library will have free drinks available in the student break room around the clock.  Also beginning on Study Day, free snacks will be available at midnight each night during finals.  Midnight Munchies is made possible through the generosity of Bradley employees, alumni, and student groups.  Support is also received from the Cullom-Davis Friends of the Library and various area businesses and individuals.  The “Munchies” committee is attempting to go green by encouraging the use of reusable mugs and reducing trash whenever possible.  Midnight Munchies reusable mugs are currently on sale for $2.00 in the library office, and will be available each night during snack serving as well.  The committee invites anyone studying in the library in the midnight hour to join in the munching!  Donations and volunteers for the event are still needed – to help contact Sharon Obery – sobery@bradley.edu, 309-677-2850.
On Study Day Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity will be selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the library student break room beginning at 10am. The event is serving as fundraiser, with proceeds benefitting Chai Lifeline: an organization that provides support and resources for the families of terminally ill children. Take a break from studying, enjoy a treat and support this great cause.
